Zapp treatment tips
Correct application of Zapp gives prolonged protection against
lice reinfestation in your sheep mob.
However, treatment failure
can often occur due to inaccurate dosing and application. If
the backline strip is off-centre, or too short, the chemical
may not reach all areas on the fleece. With poor application
there are likely to be patches of low insecticide concentration
where lice could survive. To make sure you get the best coverage
and penetration of Zapp and comprehensive control of lice, follow
the treatment tips below.
- Firstly clean shearing is important. If cotted fleeces, grass
seeds, lumpy wool or flystrike prevent clean shearing, lice
control by any method will be poor.
- Before applying Zapp, shake the container and check the dose
accuracy of the Zapplicator or Power Doser.
- Apply the correct dose. Dose to the heaviest in the mob.
Check by weighing, don't guess.
- Apply Zapp in a continuous band along the spine, from poll
to tail. See animation below.
- To assist accurate dosing, sheep should be packed close together
to minimise movement, so that Zapp can be applied accurately
along the spine.
- Check dye marks at the end of each race. Retreat any animals
in doubt.
- Ensure ALL animals have been treated before being released
and kept separate from any untreated mobs.
- Proper cleaning and storage of the gun and nozzles is important
to make sure your application equipment provides continued
high performance.
- Clean out Zapplicator with vegetable oil, e.g. olive oil,
before storage. Store Zapp below 30ºC in the original
container, tightly closed, in a stable cool place.
